Elaborate wood carving has featured in public and private architecture in Afghanistan and its region for millennia. In Badakhshan, Nuristan, Kunar and other heavily forested provinces, wood was the dominant building material, integrating decorative features, often with pre-Islamic origins, from columns and doors to filigree jali windows and screens.
