Artisan: House of Wandering Silk

These luxurious raw silk scarves are handwoven by members of the Self Employed Women's Association in the Bihar State in India. SEWA is a trade union whose female workers depend entirely on their own labour for survival. They are poor, illiterate and vulnerable, but they are extremely economically active, contributing significantly to the economy and society with their work. SEWA's two main goals are to facilitate full employment and self reliance for these marginalized women.

Raw silk - also known as waste silk - is taken from a part of the cocoon that is normally thrown away after the silk filament has been used. The silk is then handspun into thick, uneven threads, dyed vibrant colors and woven into beautiful scarves.

Dimensions: approx. 22in x 79in (56cm x 200cm).
100% silk. Handwash separately. Do not soak.
