Artisan: Basira Raoufi - Doorstoppers from Afghanistan
Style signature:
Wooden designs that balance classic Islamic carving style with a modern, contemporary aesthetic.
Basira Raoufi was born in 1992 and grew up in Kabul. She finished secondary school after the fall of Taliban and later joined the Turquoise Mountain Institute for Afghan Art and Architecture where she studied carpentry, jali-making and decorative wood carving. While woodworking is a very unusual choice of profession for a woman in Afghanistan, Basira graduated and got a job with one of the Turquoise Mountain-affiliated businesses in Kabul. She now makes a living from carving beautiful and functional products.
“I love designing and carving, and hope that I can be part of developing a strong enough demand for these skills so that other young women can have the same opportunity as me.”
