Unbleached calico lampshades featuring block-printed or hand-embroidered and painted designs.
Backstory:
Born of European and Pakistani parents, Ilona Yusuf has lived most of her life in Pakistan. She had a long career in crafts, teaching, designing and hand-painting glass panels and silk cloth before turning her talents to lighting and furniture in 2000. In her atelier, Ilona produces a range of block-printed and hand-embroidered lampshades. Ilona uses traditional methods in a contemporary manner overseeing a team of artisans which includes embroiderers and block printers. The blocks that she uses are often antiques, and shades are made using a restricted palette of unbleached, off-white cotton with motifs in ochre, dark brown or black. Her embroidery designs are based on local flora and fauna (such as finches in a tree) or Mughal floral motifs. She employs six artisans directly with many more playing a significant part in the process.
Inspiration:
“I want to promote local crafts and male and female artisans, introducing them to new ways of using traditional designs, techniques and materials.”
