Kabul - Day 2

Try to imagine what it would be like if you had never spoken to a man who was not your relative...

We spent the day with organizations that work with female artisans in extremely remote areas of Afghanistan. On top of the general problems that most artisans operating on various levels face - product development, lack of market information, quality control, sales, etc. - one of the major challenges for female artisans who are trying to access even local markets is lack of social skills and confidence. Even today, there are still many Afghan women outside the cities who have only been in direct contact with men who are part of the family. But to sell their products and earn an income, they must engage with a supply chain that is entirely male dominated. Only the few women who have the support of their family and close community can manage to do this.
